The Evolution of 'Free' Software.
In 1983 programmer Richard Stallman launched the GNU Project to create a free Unix-like operating system, thus also establishing the Free Software Movement. In 1985 he set up the Free Software Foundation, aiming to promote user's rights to access and modify software.

"Free software is a matter of liberty, not price." - Richard Stallman
This quote is famously conceptualised through the notion that
'free' should be thought of as in "free speech" not as in "free beer",
emphasising the positive freedom to distribute rather than a negative freedom from cost. This concept is still misunderstood since a great deal of 'free software' was (and still is) free of charge.
