In The Beginning.
Starting in the early 1950's, long before the term 'Open Source' was used, computer companies were in the hardware business. Anything that reduced software cst and made more programs available made the hardware companies more competitive, so software was freely exchanged.
This changed in the 1960's, when the first licensed software product was developed by ADR, independant of any hardware company. In 1968 ADR patented their software, to stop sharing of their product. They therefore retained control of resale and reuse,
and the industry of Proprietory Software began.
