The Open Source Initiative.
In 1998 Eric Raymond and others replaced the term 'free software' with Open Source Software (OSS) as an expression with less ambiguity and which is more comfortable and acceptable for the corporate world. With this they began the Open Source Movement and founded the Open Source Initiative.

Although born form the same history with the same overall idea, the Open Source Initiative and the Free Software Foundation are seperate and different organisations, and the Open Source Movement is also completely seperate from the Free Software Movement. The relationshop is described by Richard Stallman as
"We disagree on the basic principles, but agree more or less on the practical recommendations. So we can do work together on many specific projects."
It was hoped that Open Source would become a more persuasive argument for businesses than 'free software'.
